HTC U Ultra first impressions: Can this be a true competitor?

Considering most phones are going down the route of nearly bezel-less displays, HTC’s new handset certainly stands out. Unfortunately, the device’s specs may feel underpowered with Samsung’s Galaxy S8 on the horizon.

The HTC U Ultra sports a Snapdragon 821 processor, 4GB of RAM, 64GB or 128GB of storage (expandable with microSD), 3,000mAh battery, and a 12-megapixel “UltraPixel” camera with an aperture of f/1.8, which should be great in low light conditions.

Fortunately, the device comes with Android 7.0 Nougat out of the box, along with additional HTC-made AI enhancements, including what the company refers to as “Sense Companion.” According to what HTC told us in January, the software is designed to show users only the notifications they care about.

You can read more about the HTC U Ultra from our initial hands-on post from January. Notice that the device doesn’t come with a Snapdragon 835 chip, a headphone jack, nor is it Google Daydream ready. The device also isn’t IP68 water and dust resistance, which is becoming more important to consumers.
