“West Side Story,” nominating the musical for seven Oscars including best picture, best director and best supporting actress (Ariana DeBose).
There’s one major “West Side Story” oversight the week before Sunday’s Oscars telecast.
Star Rachel Zegler has not been invited to the Academy Awards ceremony – at all. The 20-year-old breakout, who played Maria, is planning to watch the show on her couch in sweatpants.
Zegler, who surprisingly missed out on a Best Actress nomination, let the news out in the comments of an Instagram post after a fan asked what the actress would be wearing to the Oscars.
“I’m not invited,” Zegler responded in the comments. “So sweatpants and my boyfriend’s flannel.”
RACHEL ZEGLER:Does stardom her way with ‘West Side Story’
The news caused an immediate stir, with one commentator adroitly stating the news was “immensely bogus.” Another commented, “How’s the leading actress of a movie that’s up for 7 Academy Awards not invited? How does that make any sense???”
Zegler explained her own exasperation. “Y’all I have tried it all. But it doesn’t seem to be happening :’).” She added that she will “root for ‘West Side Story’ from my couch and be proud of the work we so tirelessly did 3 years ago.”
The actress did pray “some last minute miracle occurs and I can celebrate our film in person. But hey, that’s how it goes sometimes, I guess,” Zegler wrote, giving “thanks for all the shock and outrage. I’m disappointed, too.”
“But that’s okay. so proud of our movie ❤️,” she wrote.
