The estranged husband of country singer Sara Evans, Harry ‘Jay’ Barker, was arrested in Nashville Saturday in connection with allegations he tried to strike her with his vehicle.

Barker, 49, was charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon in the incident, authorities said, according to WIAT, which reviewed an affidavit in the case.

Barker was held in custody at the Davidson County Jail, where he was on a 12-hour domestic violence hold with a bond of $10,000; he was released on bond Saturday evening.

The latest: The estranged husband of country singer Sara Evans, Harry ‘Jay’ Barker, was arrested in Nashville Saturday in connection with allegations he tried to strike her with his vehicle. Evans, 50, was snapped in Nashville in 2019 

Authorities said that police arrived at 1:30 a.m. Saturday at a Nashville residence where Evans had attended a party at the home of a neighbor. 

Evans had gotten in the car of a friend to go across the street, at which time Evans said she saw Barker ‘backing up his vehicle at a high rate of speed attempting to hit them but missed.’

Officials said Barker vacated the area before Evans contacted police, but later came back and talked to authorities.

Evans and another witness told authorities that Barker tried to strike them in his vehicle, at which point Barker was arrested.

Barker was held in custody at the Davidson County Jail, where he was on a 12-hour domestic violence hold with a bond of $10,000; he was released on bond Saturday evening

The couple was seen in April of 2011 at the ACM Awards in Las Vegas 

The couple, who wed in 2008, are separated, the affidavit states. Evans was previously married to Craig Schelske for around 13 years and has three children from that marriage – Avery Jack, 22, Olivia Margaret, 18, and Audrey Elizabeth, 17. She and Barker do not have children together.

Evans has had country hits including singles such as No Place That Far, Born to Fly, A Real Fine Place to Start and A Little Bit Stronger. She won a CMA award in 2001 for her video for Born to Fly.

Barker has a background in football, having played at quarterback for the University of Alabama in the early 90s, before he was drafted into the NFL by the Green Bay Packers in 1995. He was cut from Packers, but subsequently signed to the New England Patriots and Carolina Panthers organizations, but did not play in a game.

He went on to play for the Canadian Football League’s Toronto Argonauts between 1998 to 2001, and the XFL’s Birmingham Thunderbolts in 2001.

Since 2018, he has hosted the radio program The Jay Barker Show on 100.9 FM.

Barker is slated to appear in court March 22 in connection with the charges.
