Jeopardy! host Mike Richards issued a statement Wednesday apologizing for past offensive jokes he made on a podcast he hosted years back.
‘It is humbling to confront a terribly embarrassing moment of misjudgment, thoughtlessness, and insensitivity from nearly a decade ago,’ Richards, 46, told The Ringer in response to a report from the outlet over the TV personality, who was made the host of the iconic game show earlier this month.
The report cited Richards’ past remarks on The Randumb Show, a 2013-2014 podcast about the game show The Price Is Right, which he was an executive producer on prior serving in the role on Jeopardy!

According to the outlet, Richards made inappropriate remarks about women looking ‘really frumpy and overweight’ in one-piece swimsuits; suggested cohost Beth Triffon audition for Taiwanese roles alluding to her height; and made a remark in reference to large noses, ‘Ixnay on the ose-nay, she’s not an ew-Jay.’
The Ringer reported that the podcast and its hosting site were scrubbed after they had asked Richards’ rep for comment on the past remarks.
In his statement to the outlet, Richards acknowledged taking down the site, and the nature of the past remarks, saying, ‘Looking back now, there is no excuse, of course, for the comments I made on this podcast and I am deeply sorry.
‘The podcast was intended to be a series of irreverent conversations between longtime friends who had a history of joking around. Even with the passage of time, it’s more than clear that my attempts to be funny and provocative were not acceptable, and I have removed the episodes.’

Richards continued: ‘My responsibilities today as a father, husband, and a public personality who speaks to many people through my role on television means I have substantial and serious obligations as a role model, and I intend to live up to them.’
Richards was named by Sony as host of the show earlier this month, with Mayim Bialik selected to host specials and spin-offs, following the death of beloved host Alex Trebek last November at the age of 80.
Trebek, who hosted the show for more than 8,000 episodes since 1984, died from pancreatic cancer November 8, less than two weeks he pre-taped his last series of episodes in late October.
Others who had guest hosting stints the past year in auditioning for the role included LeVar Burton, Buzzy Cohen, Anderson Cooper, Katie Couric, Ken Jennings, Dr. Mehmet Oz, Dr. Sanjay Gupta, Savannah Guthrie, Robin Roberts, Aaron Rodgers, George Stephanopoulos and Bill Whitaker.
