Overdose deaths diminution in B.C. though officials contend safer drug supply needed

Overdose deaths related to unlawful drugs forsaken by 36 per cent final year in British Columbia compared with a year earlier, though a series of fatalities is about a same as when a range announced a provincial health emergency.

Chief Coroner Lisa Lapointe says 981 people died of suspected overdoses in 2019.

But that doesn’t make her work any easier.

“Regardless of a form of genocide we are questioning it does take a toll,” pronounced Barth.

She remembers one in particular, in 2017, when she got a call from a lamentation father who wanted to know what series his son was among the many who had overdosed that year.

She had to tell him his son was series 1,207 of 1,226.

“I’m propitious we have not mislaid somebody in this way,” she said, observant a passed she sees come from all walks of life and socio-economic backgrounds.

Barth would also like to see a purify supply of drugs done accessible to users so people are not during risk of failing from fentanyl.

“A protected supply is what we need. We used to do maybe dual overdoses a month and this series is since a drug supply is poisoned.”
