OnPolitics: You guessed it. We have more impeachment news

Who here has been watching the impeachment trial against President Donald Trump? Why did you raise your hand? We can’t see you. 

The good news is that the USA TODAY politics team has been covering the impeachment inquiry and the Senate trial with gusto. So it shouldn’t come as a surprise that day 2 of Democrats making their case will be our primary topic for today’s OnPolitics newsletter. 

Enough stalling, let’s get to it. 

What happened during today’s session? 

• Democrats used Lindsey Graham’s Clinton impeachment speech in Trump’s Senate trial. Graham said in 1999 that committing a crime isn’t needed for impeachment. The tables have turned and now GOP defenders of Trump are saying the president committed no crime and shouldn’t be impeached. 
• Sen. Susan Collins said she was “stunned” by remarks given by House Judiciary Chairman Jerry Nadler, who accused senators of being complicit in a cover-up if they shot down measures to hear from additional witnesses. 
• Republicans are eager to hear Trump’s side. Trump’s defense team will take the floor Saturday and GOP lawmakers are ready for it. “All I can tell you is from the president’s point of view, he did nothing wrong in his mind,” Graham said.
• Senators were spotted with fidget spinners as impeachment trial proceedings. Sens. Tom Cotton, R-Ark., Richard Burr, R-N.C., and Pat Toomey, R-Pa., were had spinners on their desks. 

Trump makes Twitter history, again

Trump tweeted on Wednesday. Okay, correction, Trump tweeted a ton on Wednesday. This is awkward. Another correction. President Trump tweeted so much on Wednesday that he broke a record for tweets in one day.

Trump shattered his record of 123 Twitter posts in a day – which was set Dec. 12 as the House Judiciary Committee debated two articles of impeachment against him – with 142 tweets and retweets, according to data compiled by Factbas.se. 

Joe Biden-Bernie Sanders’ argument on Social Security spills into final sprint for Iowa

Joe Biden and Bernie Sanders aren’t easing up on a dispute about Biden’s record on Social Security.

Biden, the former vice president, and Sanders, a U.S. Senator from Vermont, are the leading candidates heading into the Feb. 3 Iowa caucuses. With less than two weeks before the first-in-the-nation nominating contest, each is arguing they have the strongest records of protecting Social Security, and that the other side is trying to tear them down.
