Months after it was first reported that Colin Farrell will be playing The Penguin in Warner Bros.’ The Batman, director Matt Reeves has confirmed the news.
‘Oz’ is a reference to The Penguin’s given name, Oswald Cobblepot, and the tweet comes hours after the first photos of Farrell leaked from the London set.

London-based Twitter users Mosho and Wade Gravett posted a number of photos from the set featuring Farrell, who was wearing a black coat and holding an umbrella while sporting a grey head of hair.
While none of the other stars were spotted on set, Gravett speculated that Robert Pattinson was in some of the photos, though you can’t fully see his face.

Matthew McConaughey leads Colin Farrell, Hugh Grant, and… The photos in question featured an actor sitting atop a motorcycle with a camera rig, though Pattinson’s face is not seen.
Farrell’s casting was first revealed by Deadline in November, though it was never officially confirmed that he’s playing The Penguin until now.
He rounded out a trio of villainous characters, alongside Paul Dano as Edward Nashton, a.k.a. The Riddler and Zoe Kravitz as Selina Kyle, a.k.a. Catwoman.
Pattinson portrays Bruce Wayne, a.k.a. Batman, with Andy Serkis playing his faithful butler Alfred Pennyworth and Jeffrey Wright as Commissioner Gordon.

The cast is rounded out by John Turturro as mobster Carmine Falcone and Peter Sarsgaard in an unspecified role.
Farrell’s character The Penguin was first seen in the comics in 1941, created by Bob Kane and Bill Finger, who is one of Batman’s most iconic enemies in the comics.
Still, the character has only been seen once on the big screen, in 1992’s Batman Returns, played by Danny DeVito, though Robin Lord Taylor most recently portrayed him on the Fox series Gotham.

Farrell will next be seen in The Gentlemen, a prequel to the Kingsman movies, starring alongside Matthew McConaughey, in theaters January 24.
Farrell also has director Tate Taylor’s Ava coming soon, starring alongside Jessica Chastain and Geena Davis, though it doesn’t have a release date yet.
The actor also has After Yang and Voyagers in post-production, and he is also filming The North Water mini-series.
