‘Joker,’ ‘Parasite,’ ‘Little Women,’ ‘Irishman’ receive Writers Guild film nominations
Director Bong Joon-ho’s “Parasite,” Sam Mendes’ “1917” and Todd Phillips’ “Joker” continued their awards momentum after Sunday’s Golden Globes, earning Writers Guild Awards nominations Monday morning.
The best original screenplay nominees include “1917” (co-written with Krysty Wilson-Cairns), which surprised with a best drama win at the Globes, as well as the coming-of-age story “Booksmart,” Rian Johnson’s “Knives Out,” Noah Baumbach’s “Marriage Story” (which earned Laura Dern a best supporting actress Globe) and the South Korean film “Parasite” (which won best foreign language film at the Globes).
Best adapted screenplay nominees included “Joker,” following Joaquin Phoenix’s best actor Globes win. The Mister Rogers film “A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood,” Netflix’s “The Irishman,” “Jojo Rabbit” and “Little Women” all earned nominations.
Notably missing: Quentin Tarantino’s “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood,” which earned the filmmaker a screenwriting Globe. Tarantino declined to join the Writers Guild.

In the documentary screenplay category, Alex Gibney earned two of the five nominations with “Citizen K,” about Russian oligarch Mikhail Khodorkovsky, and “The Inventor: Out for Blood in Silicon Valley,” about the failure of health technology corporation Theranos.
The winners will be announced at the 72nd annual WGA Awards on Feb. 1, when dual ceremonies will be held in Los Angeles and New York
