Judge sets new date for second Paul Manafort trial, will start Sept. 24

WASHINGTON – A federal judge granted a partial delay in Paul Manafort’s second financial fraud trial, ordering opening arguments in the case to begin Sept. 24.

U.S. District Judge Amy Jackson said Tuesday that jury selection would begin as originally scheduled on Sept. 17, but she set the new date to allow attorneys for the former Trump campaign chairman more time to prepare.

The delay was granted a week after Manafort was convicted in a Virginia federal court on eight counts of related tax and bank fraud.

In the second trial, Manafort faces charges of money laundering, failing to register as a foreign agent and witness tampering.

Expressing serious concern for the continuing publicity surrounding the case, Jackson announced that she will close the courtroom during jury selection, as potential panelists are questioned by the judge and lawyers in the case.

The action, Jackson said, was being taken in part to protect the jurors’ privacy.
