April is starting off deadly quiet with A Quiet Place. This horror flick is actor John Krasinski’s directorial debut, and he stars alongside his real-life wife Emily Blunt. A family lives alone and in utter silence, hiding from some kind of beast that seems to have destroyed civilization. They use sign language to communicate, and walk on sand wherever possible.
While the trailers have given us some idea of what’s going on, they’ve done a good job of keeping the monsters off-screen. This is an intriguing concept for a movie, and we’re hoping Krasinski’s first time helming a movie goes as well as the trailers are suggesting.
The quiet won’t last long, though. With a few exceptions, the next few months at the movies are going to be loud. First up is Dwayne Johnson’s third go at a video game movie. (Counting both 2005’s Doom and last year’s excellent Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle). Rampage might look more like San Andreas than Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, but it actually started life as an arcade game way, way back. In that game, you played as monsters going on the titular rampage, destroying buildings and eating civilians like snacks.
This time around, the monsters are more like a natural disaster. They’ve grown far beyond their original sizes, and someone is responsible. All Dwayne Johnson’s character knows is that his gorilla buddy George is going to make it out alive.
For a lot of us, Dwayne Johnson and special effects are enough to make a movie worth the time, but it’d be nice if it actually ended up a good movie, too.
Get your canes and walkers, I’m going to make some of you feel old: Super Troopers came out seventeen years ago. And meow, after almost two decades, the boys are back on the road. A border dispute has arisen between the U.S. and Canada, and they have to establish law and order in the disputed area. That’ll go well.
The principal cast is back for another round of shenanigans, and the movie hits on 4/20, so we’re starting from a good place. The Broken Lizard team has struggled to recapture the magic of Super Troopers since, with movies like Club Dread and Beerfest pulling in hardcore Troopers fans but not hitting the same cultural zeitgeist as their first movie.
We’re trying not to get our hopes up, but it’s good to have a comedy sprinkled in among all these blockbusters.
Everyone is going to be there for Avengers: Infinity War. Captain America, Black Widow, the Hulk, Thor, Iron Man, Spider-Man and of course the Wakandan royal family – the list seems to be endless. The Mad Titan Thanos is coming to earth to retrieve the Infinity Stones and achieve his ambitions and watch the universe kneel at his feet.
