Nokia’s comeback saw the company outperform some of the market’s most popular brands in Q4 2017, including HTC, OnePlus, and Google, according to data from Counterpoint.
According to Neil Shah, a partner at Counterpoint, Nokia-branded smartphones (made by HMD Global) performed particularly well during the holidays, selling 4.4 million smartphones. Meanwhile, over 20 million feature phones branded with the Nokia name were sold during the same period.
Combined (smartphones and feature phones) sales were good enough to give Nokia the sixth spot in terms of overall marketshare. Which is pretty impressive considering HMD Global has only been selling Nokia-branded smartphones, which run Android, for the past year.
We believe, 2018 most focus for @hmdglobal should be building smartphone demand in Asia, Europe MEA as FP demand is robust driving positive cash flow,
2018 H2 1H2019 would need a focused strategy for operator-centric markets in LATAM to challenge Moto Samsung.

Nokia is still a recognizable and immensely popular brand, so it’s no surprise to hear devices branded with the company’s name are selling well. The company’s phones were number one in Vietnam and “most Middle East markets,†so it’s likely HMD will continue to focus resources on releasing devices where it’s most popular.
With Mobile World Congress on the horizon, it will be interesting to see what HMD will come up with next.
