Huawei’s U.S. entrance just became tough as major carrier pulls out

Just one day before Huawei was set to announce its strategy for entering the United States in remarkable fashion, a report has come out that ATT won’t be supporting the Chinese company. The two had been engaged in conversations for the carrier to sell the Mate 10 and/or the Mate 10 Pro in the U.S. under an exclusive arrangement.

The report published by CNBC doesn’t state exactly how the last-minute snafu occurred, and neither company has responded to requests for comment.

Huawei will host its CES 2018 press conference in Las Vegas on Tuesday, January 9. ATT was expected to participate in the presentation, but obviously those plans appear to be shelved. The rising brand, which currently sits near the top in terms of global smartphone sales, might decide to delay it’s entrance into the U.S. until a replacement is found. The logical partner would be T-Mobile due to its use of a GSM network, though no one has confirmed the magenta-loving carrier is a likely partner.

Without question, this report makes CES a must-watch for the mobile industry. Huawei’s plans included a big-budget advertising campaign and ATT was believed to be contributing its resources as well. All eyes will be on Huawei as it explains, seemingly without a U.S. carrier by its side, how it’ll penetrate the market.
