In addition to working on the sequel to Spider-Man: Homecoming, Sony is working on an animated Spider-Man movie—one with Christopher Miller and Phil Lord both involved. Well, Sony released the first teaser trailer for Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, and it’s already shaping up to be pretty phenomenal.
The premise of the new movie is still unknown, but it’s already differentiating itself in a big way. Rather than feature Peter Parker, the film will introduce a wider audience to Miles Morales, who first appeared in Ultimate Fallout #4 in August 2011.
The tagline in the movie says that in this new universe, more than one person wears the mask, meaning Peter Parker isn’t the only friendly neighborhood Spider-Man. There’s actually a quick nod to Peter Parker early in the teaser, as Miles Morales visits a cemetery that has Parker’s name on a headstone.
While that plot will be very interesting to see unfold, it’s the gorgeous visuals that really caught my eye. Holy cow does it look amazing. It truly does look like a comic book come to life, using a beautiful blend of CGI and art to create a vibrant version of New York City.
Slated for a December 2018 release, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse stars Shameik Moore, Liev Schreiber, Mahershala Ali, and Brian Tyree Henry.
