World Cup 2019 live: Follow USWNT vs. Spain Round of 16 match

The United States Women’s National Team begins its knockout-round action in the 2019 World Cup against Spain in its Round of 16 match Monday at 12 p.m. ET (Fox Sports 1).

The Americans had no trouble against their group-stage opponents. They routed Thailand 13-0beat Chile 3-0 and topped Sweden 2-0. The USWNT won Group F with a record 18 goals and three shutouts.

Spain went 1-1-1 in Group B to finish second.

The United States beat Spain 1-0 in January during the only game the two teams have played against each other. The winner of this match will face France in the quarterfinals June 28.

Here is everything to know about the match.

Follow updates from the game below:

79TH MINUTE: Megan Rapinoe narrowly misses a hat trick as she plays a shot with the outside of her right foot that flies past the post.

Spain has brought on Andrea Falcón to replace Alexia Putellas to try and inject some offense.

76RD MINUTE: Referee confirms her decision. Megan Rapinoe steps up for the penalty after it appeared Alex Morgan was going to take it before the VAR review. Rapinoe again deposits it in the left corner for a goal. U.S. has the lead with 15 minutes left.

This hasn’t been pretty for the U.S. But the game should now open up with Spain needing to press forward.

73RD MINUTE: And we’ve got some controversy. Rose LaVelle drew contact – though it seemed fairly insignificant – and went down. USA is awarded its second penalty of the game. And we’re going to VAR after a lengthy delay.

68th MINUTE: Americans still struggling to find space in the final third. Spain has done a good job of packing things in. U.S. still with just one shot on goal – Rapinoe’s penalty – which is a sign that they’re not sharp in front of goal.

Carli Lloyd could be brought on to help spark things. U.S. still has not made a substitution.

63rd MINUTE: And this time it is a narrow miss for Spain. Again finding space on the left side of the United States defense, Lucía García cut in and went for the far post. The shot narrowly missed after beating goalie Alyssa Naeher.

60th MINUTE: Another close miss for the Americans as Rose Lavelle’s left-footed shot from 18 yards out just misses the crossbar. The scoring opportunity came after Crystal Dunn playing forward from her right back position beat a defender into the box. That’s could be an opening for the USA as the game continues.

55th MINUTE: Alyssa Naeher with a good punch out on a dangerous ball into the box after Spain had won a corner. United States comes back and Tobin Healh just skied a ball past the crossbar as she tried from just outside the box on the right wing.

50th MINUTE: Some good back-and-forth action between the teams as each looks for the crucial next goal. Tobin Heath down and holding her ankle after contesting a ball with a Spain defender.

And about 30 seconds later Alex Morgan is down after another challenge. Both teams playing very aggressive early in the second half.

HALFTIME: USA 1, Spain 1. United States has had plenty of chances, but Spain going toe-to-toe with the Americans. The U.S. defense, meanwhile, is definitely showing the effects of being very lightly tested until now.

Americans have had 57% of the possession but managed just one shot on goal – Rapinoe’s penalty – during the first 45 minutes.

STOPPAGE TIME: Spain whistled for foul on Alex Morgan — it’s been going after her all game — and Megan Rapinoe takes the free kick from about 30 yards out. Just beyond Morgan and then Rose Lavelle.

37th MINUTE: Megan Rapinoe gets yellow card for a really weak foul on Marta Corredera. Cristiano Ronaldo would be proud of Corredera’s theatrics.

31st MINUTE: Alex Morgan takes a knee at midfield and stays down for a few seconds. Not limping as she goes off field and is back in right away. Meanwhile, Spain makes its first substitution. Midfielder Vicky Losada out, forward Nahikari Garcia in.

1-1 SPAIN GOAL, 9th MINUTE: Big mistake by the U.S. Alyssa Naeher played a goal kick short to Becky Sauerbrunn and Lucia Garcia pressured her, causing the turnover. Jennifer Hermosa pounced on it and lofted ball over Naeher’s outstretched arm, tying score at 1 in the ninth minute.

1-0 USA GOAL, 7th MINUTE: Tobin Heath got her foot stomped on in the box by Mapi León as she was driving off the right side. She goes down and U.S. is awarded a penalty. Megan Rapinoe absolutely buries it in the back of the net. USA was looking for a quick strike and it gets it.

GAME TIME: One thing to keep an eye on is that it is HOT here. After temperatures in the 60s and low 70s for much of the last two weeks, it’s in the 90s today.

PREGAME: Sam Mewis gets the start over Lindsey Horan at midfield. While it might seem like a surprise, remember that Horan is sitting on a yellow card. Pick up another, and she’d miss  the quarterfinal against France if the U.S. advances.
