The town of Ocean City, Maryland, announced plans to reopen its beach and boardwalk to the public as soon as this Mother’s Day weekend.
The decision was made by Mayor Rick Meehan Monday night, May 4, after a town council meeting, reports the Salisbury Daily Times, which is a part of the USA TODAY Network. The declaration wasn’t scheduled for discussion and the decision to issue the declaration was made after the meeting.
The reopening of the town’s beach, beach access points, boardwalk and inlet parking lot could come as soon as Saturday, but an official announcement detailing the new declaration is expected to be released Tuesday.
The decision to reopen the beach and boardwalk comes almost a week after Ocean City extended its beach and boardwalk closure.
The extension of the closure was originally scheduled to expire on May 15. Town officials did say if Gov. Larry Hogan decided to lift Maryland’s stay-at-home order before May 15, the town would lift its beach and boardwalk closure.
