Tom Holland's dad wants to 'save Spider-Man': 'My hunch is that the show will continue'

At the Los Angeles premiere of “Spider-Man: Far from Home,” Tom Holland talks about filming without Robert Downey Jr., while Samuel L. Jackson and Jake Gyllenhaal discuss whether they feel any pressure from the fans. (June 27)

Tom Holland’s father Dominic Holland, a British comedian and writer, is assuring fans that Spider-Man is going to be okay in the wake of the rumors that his son’s beloved character may be departing the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Both fans and Holland’s Marvel brethren — including Jeremy Renner and Ryan Reynolds — have been up in arms since news broke that discussions between Sony and Disney had reached an impasse over Spider-Man’s fate.

Accompanied by a #SaveSpiderMan tweet, Holland wrote a blog post on Wedneday titled “Stormy waters” that largely reassures fans that, while he “(knows) nothing about the impasse between Sony and Marvel,” he predicts matters will be resolved that keeps his son within the franchise.

“Now I see that Tom is included in yet another twitter ‘storm’ – (always a storm with twitter) – with the news that Spider-Man/Sony/Marvel love-in has ended,” he wrote. “Predictably, speculation is rife. Boycotts are being called for. Heads must roll. Heads will roll. #saveSpider-Man – and when Super-heroes need saving, then we truly are in trouble.”

“I have no inside track on such issues,” he added. “But whatever is decided by the big suits at these big Hollywood studios – my hunch is that the show will continue. Too much at stake and too many dollars riding on it – and besides, everyone wants the same thing; namely, Spider-Man on large screens keeping people safe and entertained. And with Tom in the suit, for the time-being at least.”

In a follow-up post on Thursday with the pointed title “Fake news and for the record…,” Holland acknowledged that his previous post went viral, and reiterated that he’s been kept in the dark about the discussions between Disney and Sony, and hasn’t even spoken to his son about the matter, let alone has inside information about the matter.

“Who knew that I might start making the news? Albeit fake news in this instance – as spawned from my last blog, ‘Stormy Waters’ which has elicited many headlines and conclusions and all them, entirely false,” he wrote. “As I said in the post … “I know nothing” – and my only speculation remains, that Spider-Man will go on saving people and keeping us all entertained.”

“In fact, Tom Holland’s dad has not even spoken with Tom Holland since this seismic story broke and he certainly is not taking any sides, he is not calling for any boycotts and he will not be storming any offices anytime soon,” he continued.

‘We want Spider-Man back’: Marvel stars Ryan Reynolds, Jeremy Renner want Spidey to stay in the MCU

In a Sony statement to USA TODAY Tuesday night, the studio said the outstanding issue remained over the future involvement of Marvel President, and comic movie mastermind, Kevin Feige as producer in future Spider-man films.

“Much of today’s news about Spider-Man has mischaracterized recent discussions about Kevin Feige’s involvement in the franchise,” the statement said. “We are disappointed, but respect Disney’s decision not to have him continue as a lead producer of our next live action Spider-Man film. We hope this might change in the future.
