Xiaomi made its latest flagship official this week, and you won’t find a notch or a thick bezel anywhere on the exterior. Plus, the Mi Mix 3 ships with premium hardware and software. The more you examine it, the more you realize Xiaomi might’ve created an identity for next-generation flagships. There’s no doubt the Mi Mix 3 can hang with today’s best.
The Mi Mix 3 takes a giant step in front of its predecessors. Xiaomi put an enlarged chin on them, and it forced the front-facing camera to capture awkward selfies. So long, Nostril Cam.
Rather than a notch or an enlarged bezel, there’s now a slide-up mechanism. It stores the front-facing cameras and sensors within the Mi Mix 3. When you need to take a selfie, just shift the backside up. Xiaomi didn’t choose a live motor; therefore, the slide-up mechanism on the Mi Mix 3 shouldn’t be problematic.
Inside, the Mi Mix 3 rocks all the cutting-edge specifications you can imagine. The flagship has a 6.4-inch Full HD+ (2340×1080) OLED display, Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 845, up to 10GB of RAM, two 12MP rear cameras, 24MP and 2MP front cameras, and a 3200mAh battery.
The software doesn’t carry too many surprises. Xiaomi’s MIUI sits atop Android, meaning you’ll sift through a bunch of custom apps and features.
In China, the Mi Mix 3 arrives on November 1. Xiaomi’s trademark pricing remains in effect. Despite all the high-end specifications, the Mi Mix 3 starts at $475. That configuration includes 6GB of RAM and 128GB for storage. If you want to double that, add $100. Xiaomi’s Forbidden City Palace Museum Edition, which has 10GB of RAM, comes in at $720.
The Mi Mix 3 will also be sold in India and other markets where Xiaomi does business. Color options are black, green, and blue. Xiaomi might release additional colors for the Mi Mix 3 in 2019, though.
By the way, Xiaomi’s throwing in a 10W wireless charger as well. So you don’t have to run out and purchase a separate accessory for wireless charging. Then again, 10W isn’t exactly fast and thus a different wireless charger could be handy. Keep that in mind, soon-to-be Mi Mix 3 owners.
As for the long-rumored 5G support, Xiaomi says it’ll release another version of the Mi Mix 3 in Europe next year.
