The OnePlus 5T won’t support one of Android’s best features

The OnePlus 5T is one heck of a device. Starting at $499 with its impressive list of specs, it’s hard not to recommend. One of the drawbacks is that it doesn’t come with Android 8.0 Oreo out of the box, which OnePlus promises will arrive soon, but it will be missing support for one key feature that may just be a deal breaker.

OnePlus announced on its forums that the OnePlus 5T won’t support Project Treble. As part of a major initiative by Google in the latest version of Android, Project Treble is meant to push out updates for devices in a timely fashion even when chipmakers like Qualcomm don’t support it. Every device updated to Android O can support the feature, but OnePlus is passing on it all together.

It’s important to note that when a device is updated to Android Oreo, supporting Project Treble is optional. But when a device ships with Android O, it will be required to work with Project Treble. Unfortunately, most of the major devices being released don’t come with Android O, and that includes the two newest Android flagship devices: the OnePlus 5T and Razer Phone.

OnePlus is hardly the only smartphone maker that will take this stance of not supporting Project Treble, but it is still a big bummer for a device that is looking like one of the best buys around. At least you still get a fantastic device at a killer price, even if it won’t get timely updates.
