Perhaps the biggest news, though, is that the NES Classic itself is coming back.
The NES Classic sold out fast enough that it’s hard to say it was ever “in stock†anywhere, with the exception of some shady bundling deals. Scalpers quickly picked up on the popularity of the system and picked up as many systems as they could, deepening the scarcity of the system. Then, Nintendo went and discontinued the thing.
Nintendo hasn’t yet revealed when the NES Classic will be available, but it sounds like summer of 2018 is when we can expect to see the 8-bit incarnation of the Classic line return.
Nintendo hasn’t announced just how limited that run will be yet, nor have they specified how long the Super NES will run for.
As optimistic as I’d like to be about this, Nintendo’s history of underestimating or remaining willfully ignorant of the popularity of their systems has become something of a tradition for the company. We’re hoping that this is the first sign of change. Also, clearly, all our thinkpieces worked.
