Shenmue 3 scoops up a publisher that doesn’t rhyme with MEGA

Shenmue, the legendary franchise that earned SEGA both a grand cult following and extraordinary fnancial losses, will unsurprisingly not be closed out by the aforementioned SEGA. Instead, the successful Kickstarter game has been picked up by Deep Silver, another move by the company who is starting to seem a little desperate for the love and affection of gamers.

The company, which has pitched in for the publication of Shenmue’s spiritual successor series Yakuza seems pretty perfect for the job. However, this was also the company that threw its weight behind Mighty No. 9 later in its development, and that is a deal that didn’t turn out so hot.

Not saying Shenmue 3 will be short of amazing, but it’s also starting to seem like Deep Silver is a bit of a glutton for punishment, given both its Kickstarter history and the Shenmue franchise’s infamous legacy.

Shenmue 3 will be released for the PC and PlayStation 4, but no date has been set it. It was first announced at E3 2014, and the days following the convention saw it become the biggest video game success ever on Kickstarter.
