Samsung isn’t afraid to gamble on an idea, even if it goes down in flames (pun intended). Its latest gamble is a insane phone that transports us back a decade. Samsung announced a legit flip phone that is impressively speced and looks just like we imagined flip phones would look like in the future.
Leading up to the announcement, there were many rumors and leaks that suggested Samsung was working on a flagship flip phone. The talk has now been confirmed with Samsung taking the wraps off the Leader 8, or “SM-G9298†if you refer to call it by its official name. Leader 8 rolls off the tongue much easier. Samsung is also completely rolling with the number 8 this year—Galaxy S8, Note 8 and now the Leader 8.
Although the basis for the design, a flip phone, may be something of a relic, the Leader 8’s specs are anything but. Samsung packed it to the brim with top-of-the-line specs including a Snapdragon 821 processor, 4GB of RAM, 64GB of storage with expandability, 12MP camera with f/1.7 aperture, 2,300mAh battery and a fingerprint scanner. But the crown jewel of the Leader 8 is the two 4.2-inch OLED displays—for when it’s opened and closed. This makes it easy to use whichever way you want to.
