Did anyone ever suspect Disney could make a film based on a theme park work? And then did they ever think there would end up being five of them?
No, this is not a review for Haunted Mansion 5.
Pirates Of The Caribbean- Dead Men Tell No Tales is the fifth installment in the franchise, and it’s landing on physical media this week. The film transfer for the Blu-ray set we were sent is absolutely gorgeous, with amazingly crisp audio to match. The overall package, which has become standard for Disney, also includes a DVD copy of the film as well as a code to redeem the digital version, which will show up in your Disney Movies Anywhere account.
The bonus features, to be frank, are not anything to cause a purchase here. There is a small collection of what feel like very random featurettes, a blooper reel, four deleted scenes and a photo diary. No commentary tracks, no series retrospective, the bonus features feel very much obligatory as opposed to be something you must own.
Where this set does fall down, and is something I don’t think I have ever encountered before, is in the fonts used for the menus. No, I’m not kidding, I’m about to rant about fonts.
Overall the text in the menus is very much keeping with the pirate theme you would expect, but the issue arises in that all the fonts are colored yellow. When you highlight something to change features or select your language, it turns to a very slightly different yellow. Occasionally a dot would also appear next to what you were selecting, but it was not present on every item.
On paper, this doesn’t sound like that big of a deal, but when you’re attempting to go through every feature on a disc for the purposes of a review, it can be downright infuriating.
While the set is nice enough, it just isn’t something you feel like you must rush out and buy. With the holidays rapidly approaching our suggestion would be waiting for a markdown on Black Friday or Cyber Monday.
