Persona 5 tops the list of Japan’s best RPGs, NieR: Automata ranks in fourth

Famitsu readers are a very strange bunch. Whenever they do one of these “Top X” lists, it always seems split right down the middle between those who are loyal to the sentimental classics and those who prefer to live in the modern day.

Take this list of best RPGs ever made. With 2,295 votes cast, the top five include three timeless favorites and two games that were released within the past few months.

1. Persona 5 – 256
2. Dragon Quest III: The Seeds of Salvation – 218
3. Chrono Trigger – 194
4. NieR: Automata – 177
5. Final Fantasy VII – 169

Persona 5 and NieR: Automata are both great games, but they have quite a few decades to establish themselves as memorable favorites in the way that Dragon Quest III, Final Fantasy VII, and especially Chrono Trigger have. Give us a call in twenty years, you two, and we’ll see if we remember you.
