Nintendo’s offering their first paid online service experience with the Nintendo Switch.
Nintendo Switch Online Service will start for free if you pick the console up in March. In fact, it will remain free until fall of 2017. From there, it’s a paid service. Nintendo hasn’t announced the pricing.
One thing they did announce is their monthly game download. Here’s their verbiage on that.
Subscribers will get to download and play a Nintendo Entertainment Systemâ„¢ (NES) or Super Nintendo Entertainment Systemâ„¢ (Super NES) game (with newly-added online play) for free for a month.
It sounds like the game we get to download will go away after a month of play. We’ve reached out to our contact for clarification on this.
Brief update:Â Our contact sent the question up the ladder, but this went by on Twitter from former-WIRED editor Chris Kohler.
Confirmed by NOA: Monthly free classic game on Switch is indeed only available for that month. More deets on Virtual Console before launch.

Update Ends.
Here’s the chart Nintendo provides to cover what we’ll get by paying and what we’ll get by not.
