My Nintendo adds more boring rewards for 2017

Club Nintendo was pretty great, in hindsight. There were tons of rewards to be had for completing surveys, earning coins and achieving the gold and platinum tiers.

Typically, Nintendo fans wound up with free swag, like bags, shirts and calendars, and the top rewards involved statues and, of course, free games.

My Nintendo, the new loyalty program from the maker of Mario, pales in comparison. As the calendars rolled over into 2017, Nintendo added new rewards to My Nintendo. They pretty much stink.

These new My Nintendo rewards? Oy.

Users can turn in 450 Platinum Points for a 15 percent discount on Yoshi’s Woolly World on the Wii U, or they can turn in 400 Platinum Points for a 20 percent discount on Kirby’s Epic Yarn on the Wii.

The Gold tier is just as lame. 20 Gold Points will get users a 30 percent discount on their choice of Yoshi (the Game Boy title) on the Wii U or 3DS or Dedede’s Drum Dash Deluxe on the 3DS.

Boy, I miss Club Nintendo. The physical stuff was wonderful. I got a Pikmin tote, Animal Crossing playing cards and a few other little trinkets. The free games? They were wonderful, too. These discounts? Not so much.
