Microsoft HoloLens 2 isn’t coming until 2019

It’s been two years since Microsoft debuted the HoloLens, and it could be another two until we see its successor.

According to Thurrott, Microsoft was working on the second version of the HoloLens but decided to scrap those plans for the third generation system it was working on concurrently. Now it doesn’t sound like we’ll get a new system until 2019 at the earliest.

Microsoft reportedly felt comfortable scrapping the second-generation system for the third-generation due to a lack of competition. This made the long release span much less time sensitive. HoloLens’s closest competition, Magic Leap, doesn’t even have a system available for developers, let alone consumers.

Keep in mind that the current system is aimed at developers and for partners to build similar systems. Those products are likely due out soon, so consumers will still get a taste of Microsoft’s first-gen system before the successor launches.

By the time the next HoloLens system is available, it will have been four years since the first generation of the headset debuted. Some of the improvements that can be expected from the second-gen HoloLens include an improved headset with a better field of view and processing power.
