Is the Apple Watch Series 2 worth buying?

Last fall, Apple released the second generation of its wearable line, the Apple Watch Series 2. Before that, back in June, it also announced watchOS 3.0. This was the first step in improving the floundering response to the Apple Watch, which didn’t quite break out like the iPhone or iPad. So, is it worth buying?

Jon bought one over the holiday season and he says no. But his opinion may vary from person to person. He points out some of the issues he had with the first generation device like battery life and performance. To get a better picture if this device might better suit your needs than it did for Jon, let’s look at some of the improvements Apple made.

The design of the Apple Watch Series 2 is pretty much the same as the first generation. The only noticeable change is an added tiny speaker to make it more waterproof. Apple did improve the display. It can now reach 1,000 knits of brightness, making it much more easier to view in direct sunlight.

watchOS 3.0 is what really gives the Apple Watch new life. From the side button now summoning a Dock with live apps instead of contacts to the new dual-core processor that promises to improve the much criticized lag of the first generation. The whole experience is a lot snappier and less cluttered. You spend less time on the infinite blackhole of circular apps and more in the robust watch faces and Dock that holds the most important apps you check constantly.

Jon didn’t really experience many of these pluses or didn’t feel they impacted the usability of the Apple Watch for him. For him, it’s not worth its steep price, but don’t hold off on buying one because of his opinion. He mentions he might be in the minority, which he may very well be. Recent reports reveal Apple sold more than 6 million Apple Watches last year. Jon also points out that you might want to reconsider buying a first generation device and save some money.
