Last year was a relatively boring year for smartphones – although the notch always sparked discussion – but this year is shaping up to be much more interesting. The two trends we expect to see this year are foldable phones, and phones with 5G, and Huawei plans to launch a phone with both next month during Mobile World Congress.
Richard Yu, the boss of the consumer division, announced the news during the company’s mobile 5G launch in China. Whilst most companies will launch a foldable phone, or a 5G phone, or both, Huawei’s taking a different approach, as Yu continued:
We look forward to seeing you in Barcelona in February, where we will launch the world’s first 5G smartphone with foldable screen.
Back at the launch of Huawei’s last flagship – the Mate 20 Pro – in October, Richard Yu confirmed the company was working on a 5G foldable phone, but we weren’t expecting to see it at Mobile World Congress. This phone is likely to be joined by the company’s flagship devices for the first half of the year, including the Huawei P30 series and a successor to the Huawei MateBook X Pro.
MWC takes place from Feb. 25 to 28 and we’re also expecting new phones from Sony, Nokia, LG and more. Samsung is planning to announce its Galaxy S10 flagship on February 20, where it may be joined by its first foldable phone as well.
