A little-known fact about the HTC U11 is that it’s equipped with the hardware required to run Bluetooth 5.0, but the firm was forced to disable it because it failed to obtain certification from the Bluetooth Special Interest Group in time for the handset’s release.
That’s all about to change, though, as HTC has announced that the upcoming Android O update will allow U11 owners to take advantage of Bluetooth 5.0, which offers double the bandwidth and four times the range of Bluetooth 4.2.
“We’re excited to be able to bring this announcement to U11 customers around the world as we strive to continuously improve our customers’ mobile experience—we believe Bluetooth 5.0 compatibility helps do that,†HTC says.
The Android O upgrade will also bring a handful of new features to the table, including support for program-in-picture (PiP), notification channels and adaptive icons, as well as an abundance of much-needed bug fixes and stability improvements.
