How Emma Roberts’ Monique Lhuillier Wedding Gown Was ‘Convertible’

Emma Roberts indeed looked fabulous for her Saturday, July 25, wedding to now-husband Cody John.

Roberts, 35, and John, 36, said “I do” during an intimate ceremony held at a private residence in Idaho, during which the blushing bride looked stunning in a custom Monique Lhuillier wedding gown.

“You can remove this if you want to go strapless,” Lhuillier, 54, told the actress in Vogue footage from her final fitting, referring to the gown’s removable shawl. “This becomes a convertible version. There’s five looks in the dress.”

Roberts gushed that it was “so cool” how her frock could be transformed on the big day, which one of her friends thought would make John cry at the altar.

“He’s gonna love it, but he loves anything that I love,” Roberts predicted of her now-spouse’s reaction to her wedding gown. “He wouldn’t care if I wore jeans, but he’s definitely going to die for this.”

Roberts had worked with Lhuillier on the design of her bridal ensemble.

“I didn’t really know what I wanted. I just knew that I wanted it to feel very vintage-inspired,” the American Horror Story actress told the outlet of her dress ideas. “I’m obsessed with antique books and treasure hunting, and I love collecting old ephemera, so I really wanted that to shine through in the dress.”

Roberts also hand-picked the fabric color to make a tea-stained effect, telling Vogue, “I kind of wanted to look like a ghost — a little antique ghost doll.”

Lhuillier ultimately crafted the gown in silk chiffon for an “ethereal, romantic and vintage-inspired” aesthetic.

“This gown took nine months to make, and I would say it took close to 1000 hours to complete,” the designer said ahead of the ceremony. “The beauty of this dress is it keeps transforming throughout the night.”

Roberts wore the dress with the shawl for the ceremony, which was removed for the reception. The Maybe I Do star later changed into a vintage Lhuillier frock for the afterparty.

“I love the idea of wearing black for the afterparty,” Emma said of the charcoal-colored corset midi dress. “We love doing something that’s a little unexpected. This looks like it could be totally vintage from 100 years ago, or from now. This is going to be so fun in Idaho at the afterparty.”

Roberts, who shares 5-year-old son Rhodes with ex Garret Hedlund, and John have been together since 2022.
