LG picked up a trademark for “LG Icon,†which according to mobile industry insider Evan Blass is a smartphone.
Alongside the filing for the Icon was a separate filing for the Iconic, which seems to be a smartwatch. So there’s a good chance LG announces both a phone and smartwatch made to pair with each other. The only companies that have done that are Samsung and Apple, and that’s because those two have their own operating systems for wearables. Unless LG creates something of its own, you should expect the Iconic to have Android Wear.
The last smartwatches released by LG didn’t go over so well. The Watch Sport and Watch Style, which were co-developed with Google, were pulled from the Google Store less than a year after launching. Only Best Buy and third-party sellers have either smartwatch in stock.
Pictures of the Icon and Iconic weren’t included in their respective filings.
Earlier this month it was reported that the company intends to delay the launch of its 2018 flagship. LG may still have a presence at MWC 2018 next month, but it won’t be making any major announcements. The same report suggested new hardware will come at standalone launch event in the spring with a release date set for late April.
