Here’s How to Hide the Pixel 3 XL’s Uncommonly Large Notch

Google this week unveiled the Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL. Given the frequency of leaks in the weeks leading up to the event, nothing about the phones was all that surprising. Still, we were dismayed by the Pixel 3 XL’s forehead, which is uncommonly big, even for notches.

There’s no way around, it is a very polarizing design choice and Google understands this, which is why it included the option to hide the notch on the Pixel 3 XL. Unfortunately, Google did not make the process of hiding the notch easy, so we’re here to walk you through it.

The process is not particularly difficult, it just requires a lot of steps. But once done, you’ll be on your way to hiding the Pixel 3 XL’s notch.

  • Go to Settings
  • Scroll to the bottom of the menu and tap on System
  • Then go to About Phone
  • Go all the way to the bottom to find the device’s build number
  • Tap on the build number six or seven times until you’re greeted with a “You’re now a developer!” notification
  • Go back to System where Developer Options should now appear
  • In the Developer Options, find Device Cutout
  • Once in Device Cutout, select Hide and the notch will be hidden from view

In the software, Google actually provides users with a number of different options when hiding the notch. You can hide the notch or sport a dual notch (top and bottom), a corner notch, and more. There’s no reason to enable the other options, but they’re there if you want them.

The Pixel 3 XL looks great when you hide the notch—and that’s coming from someone who typically doesn’t mind notches. But Google’s is egregiously big and is better off when it’s hidden.
