Google this week unveiled the Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL. Given the frequency of leaks in the weeks leading up to the event, nothing about the phones was all that surprising. Still, we were dismayed by the Pixel 3 XL’s forehead, which is uncommonly big, even for notches.
There’s no way around, it is a very polarizing design choice and Google understands this, which is why it included the option to hide the notch on the Pixel 3 XL. Unfortunately, Google did not make the process of hiding the notch easy, so we’re here to walk you through it.
The process is not particularly difficult, it just requires a lot of steps. But once done, you’ll be on your way to hiding the Pixel 3 XL’s notch.
In the software, Google actually provides users with a number of different options when hiding the notch. You can hide the notch or sport a dual notch (top and bottom), a corner notch, and more. There’s no reason to enable the other options, but they’re there if you want them.
The Pixel 3 XL looks great when you hide the notch—and that’s coming from someone who typically doesn’t mind notches. But Google’s is egregiously big and is better off when it’s hidden.
