Ubisoft’s finally shared the extended E3 demo for Far Cry 5 that press (and attendees, maybe) saw behind closed doors this past June in Los Angeles. The clip is more than eight minutes in length, and it offers a few features, combat, your doggo named Boomer and a tractor.
You also see some fishing. Like, relaxing fishing that looks totally fine but also somehow out of place in a Far Cry game. Not that I’m complaining. I welcome calming distractions in adventures like this one, so I’ll take fishing any day.
Here’s the clip.
First off, Montana looks beautiful. The environment itself, the world design and the soundscape all add up to make this really convincing take on a rather rare region for video game settings.
However, Ubisoft, you’ve gotta chill with these scripted videos. Fake video game banter is really hard to pull off, and a job poorly done routinely results in way, way too much cringiness. That’s what’s on display here with this video, and it lowers the quality of what’s an otherwise cool clip.
Cringey commentary aside, I’m excited for Far Cry 5. The game hits the PC, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One on February 27, 2018.
