2017 had a very clear set of “Game of the Year†contenders for the awards season, and five of the six general frontrunners made their way into the nomination at GDC this week. Only Persona 5, which also topped a lot of lists, didn’t make the cut.
The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, Super Mario Odyssey, Horizon Zero Dawn, NieR Automata, and PUBG all entered the convention as nominees, and of course, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild walked away with the Game of the Year award. Nintendo’s hit also snagged up awards for Best Audio and Best Design.
StudioMDHR also walked away with a feather in its cap for Best Debut thanks to a strong showing from its indie hit, Cuphead. Its game also won for Best Visual Art.
