When Final Fantasy VII Remake and Kingdom Hearts III were both announced by Square Enix, its large fanbase erupted with applause. Two long-awaited projects were now within grasp, and it would only be a matter of time before they were playable.
…an exceptionally long period of time, perhaps half a decade or more.
Director Tetsuya Nomura has a reputation for extended development phases, and these two games are of no exception. However, the problem isn’t so much that they are taking too long to develop, according to Nomura in an interview with Multiplayer, but rather, the games were simply announced too early.
For Final Fantasy VII Remake, Nomura says that they announced it at E3 2015 because he didn’t want it to leak or create rumors. “I am well aware of the fact that we announced it too early, but even in the industry, word was beginning to spread that we were working on the game, so we just decided not to keep it more secret and officially reveal it.â€
And for Kingdom Hearts III, which was revealed at E3 2013, he said fan pressure forced Square Enix into an early reveal.
“Deciding when to announce your game to the public is always difficult. In our case, we receive pressure from the fans even when we do not announce anything. … People are waiting for new information regardless of whether the game has been announced or not.â€
