Evan Spiegel doesn’t care what you think of Snapchat’s update

Evan Spiegel sat down for an interview at the Goldman Sachs Internet Technology Conference in San Francisco this week, and there he said the negative feedback validates Snap’s decision to overhaul Snapchat.

The countless posts on every social media platform taking shots at Snapchat’s update aren’t having any effect on Snap. Rather than listening to users and making adjustments as needed, the company and its co-founder believe it’s just a matter of time before users stop complaining and adapt.

Here’s a snippet from the interview, as transcribed by TechCrunch:

“You need folks to use the product, to communicate with their friends to learn how to provide that better feed. The tech to some degree is a solved problem, the time to … learn is a hard problem to solve. Even the complaints we’re seeing reinforce the philosophy. Even the frustrations we’re seeing really validate those changes.”

The co-founder added that it took him a couple of months before feeling “way more attached” to Snapchat.

Certainly these comments aren’t good for the growing number of Snapchat users revolting against Snap. And to ignore their concerns isn’t too smart. Although Snap’s stock price has been on the rise since its Q4 2017 earnings came in, Snapchat is the company’s only product and faces stiff competition from Instagram and other services.

The whole situation doesn’t appear like it’ll go away quickly. The Stories feature on Instagram alone has more users than Snapchat, and the Facebook-owned service has shown no signs of slowing down. Snapchat, on the other hand, continues to go through periods of varying growth.
