Buyers beware: Best Buy is charging $100 extra for the iPhone X

If you’re thinking of preordering the iPhone X through Best Buy, there’s something you need to know. The retail company is charging a $100 surcharge over the regular price just for buying the phone outright.

Amidst the hoopla of the iPhone X preorders last night, a few users who ordered the iPhone X through Best Buy (regardless of the carrier) and opted to buy it at full price noticed their bill was a little higher than expected. That’s because Best Buy is adding an extra $100 to iPhone X preorders paid in full.

The 64GB iPhone X was sold for $1,099 and the 256GB model was sold for $1,249 even though they both cost $100 less through Apple or the carrier stores. CNET reached out to Best Buy, and it turns out this wasn’t an accident—it was done on purpose.

“Sometimes customers aren’t able to purchase phones at other locations because their desired plan or carrier makes them ineligible,” stated a Best Buy representative of the extra charge. “That’s not the case at Best Buy, as our prices reflect the fact that no matter their desired plan or carrier, or whether a customer is on a business or personal plan, they are able to get a phone the way they want at Best Buy. Flexibility has a cost, but it’s something our customers have told us they want.”

That’s a pretty lame excuse by Best Buy. Customers also have the flexibility to buy their iPhone from any number of stores. They can easily go through Apple or a carrier store, and they likely will now that they know of Best Buy’s business practices.

The $100 surcharge only applies to iPhone X preorders that were paid in full. Best Buy did not charge the extra amount for preorders done through installment plans, making the whole scenario that much more perplexing.

iPhone X buyers beware. If you are going to buy an iPhone X (at full price), it’s best you stay away from Best Buy and save yourself $100.
