‘Battlefield 2042’: Video game launching Oct. 22. Here’s what we know so far

  • June 09, 2021

Battlefield is back, and the popular team-based military-themed video game is going to feel a lot bigger.

Electronic Arts unveiled the first look at “Battlefield 2042,” launching October 22 on PC, PlayStation 4 and PS5, and the Xbox One and Xbox Series X and S.

The video game takes place in the not-too-distant future, where massive shortages of food, water and energy have fueled an unprecedented refugee crisis. The game drops players in the middle of a war between the U.S. and Russia.

“Battlefield 2042 is an evolution of the franchise and embraces what our players want – the ultimate Battlefield multiplayer sandbox with intense combat and a ton of incredible, unexpected events,” said Oskar Gabrielson, general manager of video game studio DICE, in a statement.

Here’s everything we know about “Battlefield 2042”:

It supports up to 128 players simultaneously

If you own a PC, PS5 or Xbox Series X|S, Battlefield will feature maps supporting up to 128 players. EA said PS4 and Xbox One owners will have matches featuring up to 64 players on “reduced map sizes.”

Each of the maps will include dynamic weather that changes while you play, and environmental hazards including tornadoes and sandstorms.

What types of modes will the game include?

Two familiar options return: Conquest, which involves two teams competing to capture key points on a map; and Breakthrough, where one team attacks a location the opposing team is defending.

There’s also an all-new Hazard Zone EA describes as a “high-stakes, squad-based game-type,” but did not provide further details.

Of course, this is Battlefield, so expect lots of action on foot as a soldier and behind the controls of various land and air vehicles.

A new, unknown game mode will be revealed during EA’s Play event next month.

No campaign or battle royale?

“Battlefield 2042” will reportedly focus on multiplayer only. According to games site Eurogamer, studio DICE confirmed it will not include a single-player adventure. Instead, a lot of storytelling will take place within the game’s various multiplayer options.

Also, don’t expect Battlefield to take a page from “Fortnite.” DICE tells Eurogamer there are no plans to introduce a battle royale style game mode.
