Apple’s next iPhone LCD display may boast bezel-less design

With the iPhone X, Apple took its first step towards OLED displays. This led to speculation Apple would slowly phase out the LCD panels found in iPhones for the past decade, but that may not be the case.

The Wall Street Journal is reporting Apple is looking into buying a new type of LCD display called “Full Active LCD” screen from Japan Display that would allow for a near bezel-less design similar to what Apple did with the iPhone X. Apple’s current LCD displays require extra millimeters of border area to house necessary drivers resulting in big bezels.

These new Full Active LCD screens won’t require that extra space, solving the issue of big-bordered LCD displays. Japan Display says the new displays only need 0.5 millimeters of border area and can be curved to fit the scheme Apple went with the iPhone X.

This latest news confirms an earlier report Apple was indeed looking into building a new iPhone with a 6-inch LCD display. Questions naturally arose of just how big this phone would be, but Apple seems to have found a possible workaround to make the footprint of this new iPhone significantly smaller.

Apple may just be trying to keep its options open as its sole OLED display partner is Samsung, and it is charging a premium for them. Continuing to make iPhone models with an LCD display would help curb its dependence on Samsung’s OLED display. Apple is already investing big money to get LG’s OLED display department off the ground.

That likely won’t happen until 2019, hence Apple’s inclination to look at other options beyond just Samsung.
