Apple makes privacy a priority with new feature in iOS 11.3

Apple is adding improved security to upcoming versions of iOS and macOS, with a new feature designed to protect users against phishing attempts.

Following the release iOS 11.3 beta 1, a number of users have highlighted a new Privacy icon that will appear when an Apple app or feature asks for your personal information. The new feature will be available in both iOS and macOS.

Here’s how Apple describes the feature:

You won’t see this icon with every feature since Apple only collects this information when it’s needed to enable features, to secure our services, or to personalize your experience.

Apple believes privacy is a fundamental human right, so every Apple product is designed to:

• Use on-device processing wherever possible
• Limit the collection and use of data
• Provide transparency and control over your information
• Build on a strong foundation of security

As The Verge points out, the Privacy icon is in response to a concern voiced by Felix Krause, who showed how easy it is to create a password prompt that looks exactly like Apple’s. If a nefarious app somehow got through Apple’s approval process, someone could do some real damage.

Now, users can feel safe knowing there’s no threat of their information being stolen. The Privacy icon will likely appear in the navigation bar when a password prompt appears.

Apple has rolled out iOS 11.3 and macOS High Sierra 10.13.4 Developer betas, with a wider consumer launch this spring.
