Apple discards Bing for Google in Siri and Spotlight search results

Apple is ditching Bing in favor of Google search results for Siri and Spotlight .

The news was announced this week in a statement made by Apple. Apple told TechCrunch the motive for switching was to “have a consistent web search experience.” It also went on to say it has a strong relationship with both Google and Microsoft, but the switch was for the best.

Here is Apple’s entire comment on its decision:

Switching to Google as the web search provider for Siri, Search within iOS and Spotlight on Mac will allow these services to have a consistent web search experience with the default in Safari. We have strong relationships with Google and Microsoft and remain committed to delivering the best user experience possible.

Anything searched through Siri or Spotlight for web links or video will now yield Google search results instead of Bing. Bing will still be used to for image results for the time being; Apple didn’t provide a timeframe on when the switch would be made for image results.

With the move, Apple’s ties to Google continue to grow. It already uses Google as the default search browser for Safari on iOS and Mac. It’s costing Google nearly $3 billion, but it’s a worthy investment given the large audience Apple occupies with the iPhone.

Apple began the turnover on Monday and it should be completed by now.
