Android 8.1 released to developers—Here’s what’s new

  • October 25, 2017

Google on Wednesday released the Android 8.1 Developer Preview, which is designed to enable the company’s Pixel Visual Core. The software is available for the Pixel 2, Pixel 2 XL, Pixel, Pixel XL, Pixel C, Nexus 6P, and Nexus 5X.

In addition to unlocking the Pixel Visual Core, Android 8.1 includes tweaks to how notifications work. Google says from now on, apps can only make a notification alert sound once per second; alert sounds that exceed this rate aren’t queued and are lost.

The update also includes a Neural Networks APY (NNAPI), providing apps with hardware acceleration for on-device machine learning.
