Squirrels stash more than 200 walnuts, grass under hood of woman’s car: ‘Absolutely nuts’

CLOSE

A man in Pennsylvania is warning drivers to check under their car’s hood after his wife found more than 200 walnuts stashed in her car.

Pittsburgh-area resident Chris Persic said he was dealing with his own car troubles at a dealership Monday morning when he got a call from his wife, Holly, who had stopped at the local library to drop off some movies on her way to work.

She told him that her car was making a weird noise and that when she parked at the library she could smell something burning.

“I told her to pop the hood, and this is the picture that she sent me!” he said in a Facebook post Monday.

The image showed his wife’s 2016 Kia Sorento with the hood popped open displaying over 200 walnuts that were stashed by local rodents.

“It was pretty amazing,” Chris told USA TODAY Wednesday. “I showed the service manager that I was with and he said he’s never seen anything like that.”

The picture quickly went viral after Persic posted it on Facebook, getting shared more than 450 times as of Wednesday morning.

Raking leaves again this fall? Stop right now

“Was absolutely nuts… no pun intended,” he said in the post.

Persic said it took almost an hour in the rain to clean the walnuts and grass from under the hood before he was able to take his wife’s car to an auto body shop.

When mechanics lifted her car and took off the protective plate, more walnuts fell from underneath the engine. Persic said the extra walnuts almost filled up another trash bag.

He joked that the car looked like the squirrels had been storing nuts for the next three winters. He thinks they likely did most of their work during the weekend when his wife’s car was sitting idly outside.

The next day, the couple found four or five more walnuts stashed underneath the hood.

“They were back to work,” he joked.

Persic said he’s grateful the damage wasn’t too extensive and his wife’s car is still drive-able. Apparently, auto body shop workers told him that it’s pretty common for squirrels to store things in a car – although not to this extent.

“Long story short, if you park outside, do yourself a favor and check under the hood every once in awhile,” he concluded in his Facebook post.
