Kathleen had already pledged to share the settlement money with her five daughters, 10 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

“I can’t believe this happened,” she said. Referring to Girardi, she added, “It’s a complete blow that, I guess, he’s already spent it.”

As she spoke, Darleen grabbed her hand and Linda helped her find the words.

“We just want this to be over with, one way or the other,” Linda said. “But it’s lingering, and she’s not at peace with her son’s passing, and this just, I feel like, is dragging that on.”

Kathleen holds onto a conversation she had with Chuck a few months before he died. He told her, “Mom, I lived my dream.” She finds comfort in that idea, which she had etched on Chuck’s headstone at Forest Lawn cemetery in the Hollywood Hills.

Every year on Chuck’s birthday, Nov. 2, Kathleen and some of her daughters and grandchildren gather at his grave. They bring a chili cheese dog from Tommy’s, Chuck’s favorite, and a mini 100 Grand chocolate bar, which was central to a childhood prank he played on Linda. Kathleen collects roses from the bushes Chuck planted in her yard 40 years ago, and spends hours polishing the stone and arranging the cut flowers just so, even though she knows they won’t last more than a few days.

Kathleen said that when it is her time, she will join Chuck here. After she buried him, she secured the plot next to his.

“I wanted to be by him,” she said.
