Rafael Nadal, Milos Raonic won’t play in the 2021 Western & Southern Open

Rafael Nadal’s the latest big name to officially bow out of next week’s Western Southern Open. 

The 2013 champion withdrew Wednesday from the Cincinnati Masters 1000 event with a foot injury. 

Canadian Milos Raonic, who’s No. 23 in the world in the ATP Tour rankings, also withdrew Wednesday with a heel injury. Raonic finished runner-up in the WS Open last season when it was held in New York due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Raonic and Nadal’s early exits follow Serena and Venus Williams on Tuesday, Novak Djokovic on Monday, and Roger Federer last week. 

Daniil Medvedev, winner of the 2019 WS Open when it was last held in Cincinnati, will be the tournament’s top men’s seed as the No. 2 player in the ATP rankings.

Andy Murray (2011, 2008) as well as past winners Marin Cilic (2016) and Grigor Dimitrov (2017).

The women’s field includes defending champion and two-time winner Victoria Azarenka (2020, 2013) along with past champions Karolina Pliskova (2016), Garbine Muguruza (2017) and Madison Keys (2019).

two locals stars in the draw: JJ Wolf, making his fourth consecutive appearance, and first-timer Peyton Stears, who’s coming off an NCAA Division I national championship last season with the Texas Longhorns. 

Madeira’s Caty McNally is also playing for the third straight year as a wild card in the women’s singles main draw and she’s bringing her doubles partner, talented 17-year-old Coco Gauff, playing together in McNally’s hometown for the first time.
