John Isner withdraws from BNP Paribas Open due to upcoming birth of his third child

  • October 12, 2021

John Isner, the veteran American tennis player, has pulled out of the BNP Paribas Open due to the impending birth of his third child.

Isner, seeded 20th in singles at this year’s event, won his match Sunday night and was scheduled to play his third-round match Tuesday. The tournament sent out a Tweet on Monday afternoon, saying that Isner has withdrawn to be with his wife Madison. The couple already have two children.

Isner also pulled out of the doubles field, where he was playing with fellow American Jack Sock.

With Isner’s withdrawal and top-seeded American Reilly Opelka’s Monday morning loss, there are three American men remaining in the field: Frances Tiafoe, who plays Hubert Hurkacz late Monday; Tommy Paul, who plays Andrey Rublev late Monday; and Taylor Fritz who plays Matteo Berrettini on Tuesday.

No American has won the singles title at Indian Wells since Andre Agassi in 2001. Isner was the last to make the finals, when he lost the championship match to Roger Federer in 2012.

Isner’s withdrawal means No. 10 seed Janik Sinner of Italy, who was set to face Isner on Tuesday, will advance to the Round of 16 in a walkover.
