The New York Mets just lost another key piece.
First baseman Pete Alonso has been placed on the 10-day injured list, retroactive to May 19, with a right hand sprain. This means the Mets are missing five of their eight starting position players.
In addition, right-hander Tommy Hunter has been placed on the 10-day injured list with lower back pain.
The Mets now have 16 players on the injured list.
Ahead of three games between the Mets and Miami Marlins at Marlins Park, here are the team’s major injury updates:
Jacob deGrom (right side tightness): DeGrom on Thursday made a rehab start for Low-A St. Lucie. He struck out eight batters over three hitless innings. His next step is not known, but we should find out more during the Marlins series. DeGrom is eligible to come off the injured list when ready.
J.D. Davis (left hand sprain): Davis, currently on a rehab assignment in Triple A, is eligible to come off the injured list when he’s ready. On Wednesday night, Manager Luis Rojas wasn’t ready to commit to having Davis for the Marlins series.
Brandon Nimmo (left index finger bone bruise): Rojas this week said Nimmo would join the team in Miami. Last we heard, he was going to take a few days off from swinging. He’s receiving treatment. He hasn’t played since his lone rehab game on May 13, when he felt pain in his final at-bat.
Seth Lugo (elbow surgery to remove bone spur): Lugo on Tuesday tossed a scoreless inning in his first rehab outing for Low-A St. Lucie. He needed only four pitches to get three outs. He is eligible to return on May 31.
Michael Conforto (right hamstring strain): He’s not eligible to return for this series.
Jeff McNeil (left hamstring strain): He’s not eligible to return, either.
