NFL roster cut tracker: Which notable veterans aren’t making 53-man squads?

For many NFL players, Saturday will mark the potential end to their hopes of carrying on a career in football.

By 4 p.m. ET on that day, all 32 teams must cut their rosters down to 53 players. While some players who are cut or waived could land elsewhere in the coming days — including practice squads, which have been expanded to 16 spots — a large number will be left to hold out hope in free agency as the season begins.

The coronavirus pandemic prompted the NFL to curtail training camps and eliminate preseason games, greatly limiting the opportunity for late-round rookies and undrafted free agents to make an impression on teams. But several veterans also are on the chopping block.

Here are the notable names who have been cut (check back for more in the lead-up to the deadline):

New England Patriots wide receiver Mohamed Sanu (14) runs with the ball before the game against the Baltimore Ravens at MT Bank Stadium.

QB Josh Rosen (cut by Dolphins): After attempting to trade Rosen this week, apparently without success, Miami opted to release the former top-10 draft pick Friday night, according to multiplereports. Rosen, 23, was the odd man out in a Dolphins quarterback room that also includes rookie Tua Tagovailoa and veteran Ryan Fitzpatrick.

RB Adrian Peterson (cut by Washington): Peterson, who was widely expected to start for Washington, was instead cut Friday morning — one of the first shocking moves of the weekend. The move will put third-round pick Antonio Gibson, and the team’s other younger backs, in line for more touches.

TE Richard Rodgers (cut by Washington): Per multiple reports, Washington is moving on from the 28-year-old former Green Bay Packer. His father is the assistant defensive back coach on Ron Rivera’s staff.

LB Todd Davis (cut by Broncos): According to multiplereports, Denver is moving on from the 28-year-old Davis, who started 59 games for the team over the past four years. The move came on the same day the Broncos acquired another linebacker, Austin Calitro, from the Bengals in a trade.

S Damarious Randall (cut by Raiders): The Raiders signed Randall in the offseason as a free agent to bolster the secondary, but instead released the veteran on Friday. Randall is a former first-round pick by Green Bay in 2015. He has 14 interceptions, 47 passes defended and 243 solo tackles in 65 career games with the Packers and Cleveland Browns.

WR Mohamed Sanu (cut by Patriots): New England gave up a second-round selection last October to acquire Sanu from Atlanta, but the 31-year-old caught just 26 passes for 207 yards and one touchdown in eight games.

S Ha Ha Clinton-Dix (cut by Cowboys): His stint in Dallas lasted just more than five months, as Mike McCarthy opted to move on from the former Packers and Bears safety who had been expected to start for the Cowboys.
