MLB releases new COVID-19 test results: Six players positive, down from 12 a week earlier

Six Major League Baseball players tested positive for COVID-19  in the second week of maintenance testing, down from 12 the week before, according to results released by MLB and the Players’ Association.

Thirteen teams now have had a player test positive since intake screening ended earlier this month, according to MLB, though for the moment it appears teams have avoided community spread within their home stadiums as “summer camp” leads into opening days on July 23-24.

MLB and its teams will not release the names of players testing positive without their consent; those who have tested positive during monitoring testing include New York Yankees closer Aroldis Chapman.

Players are subjected to testing every other day, while staffers are tested at least twice a week. In the seven-day period ending Thursday, MLB conducted 10,548 tests with six positives – a 0.05% positivity rate. One staff member tested positive.
