CLEVELAND — Managers Alex Cora and Dave Roberts announced their lineups and starting pitchers for Tuesday night’s All-Star Game, with Justin Verlander and Hyun-jin Ryu getting the starting the nod.

Astros right-hander Verlander gets the start for the American League, while Dodgers lefty Ryu gets the ball for the National League.

While there’s often whispers of favoritism when it comes to the game’s starting pitchers, nobody can question Ryu’s selection by his Dodgers skipper. The 32-year-old leads the majors with a 1.73 ERA in 17 starts.

“For me, he’s been the epitome of consistency and the best pitcher in the national league,” Roberts said. “Going through injuries, to come back to where he’s at right now, for me, I’m very proud of him to overcome all this adversity.

“He’s the first South Korean-born pitcher to start the All-Star Game – that’s a big deal, not only for him, but for his country.

Ryu missed the entire 2015 season and pitched only one game in 2016.

“It’s a great honor for me to start the All-Star Game, not only for me and my family but the fans in Korea,” Ryu said through an interpreter.

The National League’s starting lineup is the youngest in All-Star Game history, led by 21-year-old Braves outfielder Ronald Acuña Jr.

It’s the second career start for Verlander, who got the ball for the 2012 game in Kansas City, when he was with the Tigers.

“I don’t take these games for granted,” Verlander said. “I had the opportunity to go a few years in a row when i was younger, but then i got hurt and it makes me appreciate it all the more now.

“To start one at 36 years old … it means a lot me to be out there doing this thing again.”

Cora was on Houston’s coaching staff in 2017, when Verlander helped lead the Astros to a World Series title.

“What he’s done this year has been amazing. He’s getting better, which sucks for us,” AL manager Alex Cora said. “it’s a pleasure for me to give him the ball tomorrow.”
